MAMA IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT IS MARINERA?

Y fui preguntando a diferentes maestros, alumnos y padres de familia que es la marinera?

I went around asking teachers, students and parents about what is marinera?

Han pasado cuatro años desde que Tyler comenzó a bailar su marinera y aun tenemos problemas para que Tyler entienda que es la marinera. Tu le haz preguntado a tu niño que es la marinera? Sabe en verdad tu niño lo que significa esta danza?

It is been four years since Tyler began dancing marinera and we still experience problems making him understand, what marinera is. Have you asked your child what is marinera? Do they really know what is it?

PORQUE queremos que nuestros hijos aprendan la marinera? Nuestros hijos comienzan a bailar el baile tradicional Peruano mas reconocido a nivel mundial “La Marinera Norteña”, porque a nosotros nos gusta, porque crecimos con la marinera,  porque en el colegio nos enseñaron la marinera. A veces a mi se me escarapela el cuerpo cuando veo bailarines intrepretar la marinera, con un sentimiento sin igual. Es un sentimiento que nosotros llevamos en la sangre, que a veces no se puede explicar con palabras.

Why our kids begin dancing our traditional Peruvian dance, worldwide known as “Marinera Norteña”,  perhaps because we like it, perhaps we grew up with marinera, perhaps in our school we took lessons. Sometimes I felt goosebumps watching a couple dancing marinera, just because of that especial feeling they put into their performance. Marinera is a feeling that we have in our blood. Sometimes we can not even express with words.

 

Ahora yo me pregunto cuanto saben los niños de que es la marinera?

Tyler quien empezó a bailar desde muy pequeño, comenzó a bailar porque yo lo lleve, como muchos otros padres como una actividad extra y para que sepa de nuestro baila nacional aun viviendo lejos del Perú. Cada padre lleva a sus niños por diferentes razones, pero yo creo que la mas importante es que algun día quieran a nuestro Perú como nosotros lo queremos.

I asked myself how much do our kids really know about marinera?

Tyler who began dancing so young, he began because I took him to the class and like many other parents I thought it would be fun for him to know about our traditional Peruvian dance, especially since we live far away from Perú. Every parent take their kids for different reasons, although I believe the main reason is that one day they love Perú just like we love it. 

Cuando Tyler me dice pero dime en pocas palabras que es marinera? lo he buscado en wikipedia también para que él me entienda ah!

When Tyler asked me, could you tell me in a few words what is marinera? I have even google it on wikipedia, so he reads it, too.

• Es un sentimiento – Is a feeling
• Es una pasion – Is a Passion
• Es Interpretar – Is interpreting
• Es pensar – Is to think
• Es enamorase – Is to fall in love
• Es sacrificio – Es sacrificio 
• Es un baile elegante, estilizado donde el hombre corteja muy románticamente a la mujer. It is an elegant dance, where the male courtship the woman in a very romantic way.

Cuentanos que es para ti, la marinera? Como le explicas a un niño todos esos sentimientos? You can tell us what is marinera for you? How do you explain a kid all these feelings and ways of interpreting the dance?

Creanme que es muy difícil explicarle a un niño, por eso hemos tenido las respuestas tan especiales de Tyler como cuando le dijo su profesor ENAMORALA, ENAMORA A TU PAREJA, a lo que Tyler respondió: PERO YO NO LA AMO. Obvio, el solo ama a su madre…jajaja (una bromita), no es asi, si no que por ejemplo en Estados Unidos el decirle a un niño acércate más a la niña, metele más la cara, entre peruanos conocedores del baile lo entendemos, pero en la cultura americana puede ser interpretado como un acoso o algo que esta mal. El tema de la afección es reprimido, por lo general la cultura americana no son de estarse abrazando y besando cuando se saludan, quizás si no se ven en mucho tiempo SI, pero cada vez que se ven NO.

Believe me it is hard to explain a kid, about these answers, and that is why we have gotten especial responses from Tyler: like when his trainer told him: YOU NEED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR PARTNER, and Tyler responds: BUT I DO NOT LOVE HER. He only loves his mommy for sure…LOL, In the United States telling a kid get close to a girl, or put your face extremely close to the girl, may be interpreted as harassment. Americans in general I don’t think they are very touchy feelings like we Peruvians are. We can be hugging and kissing all day; while for Americans they even handshake when they say HI, there isn’t a kiss or a hug, is just a different culture.

Es dificil que un niño entienda BAILA CON PASION, creanme como se lo explicamos? It is hard to explain to a kid dance with passion, how do you explain it?

Creo que lo que más a entendido hasta ahora es que bailar marinera, mejorar día a día para ser mejor chalan, e interpretar el baile y su significado implica MUCHO SACRIFICIO, Cada vez que lo veo, lo siento mas a gusto bailando su marinera y lo disfruta. Lo principal es que se divierta, disfrute su baile y que su carita lo diga todo;)

I believe what Tyler has understood is that to dance marinera, to be a better chalan, to know the meaning of the dance, it takes a lot of sacrifices. Every time I see him dancing, I see he likes it more and enjoys dancing his marinera. Having fun, enjoying the dance is the best feeling and watching his happy face, makes it all worth it.

Los chalanes que vivimos fuera tenemos una tarea doble, al tener que hablar el idioma de donde vivimos y ademas entender el español y las palabras técnicas que se usan para bailar nuestra marinera.

The chalanes (marinera dancers) who aren’t living in Perú, and who are from other countries where the native language is different than Spanish, have double work learning marinera, because they speak their own language, plus spanish and they have to learn technical words to dance marinera. I have have to add something here we know marinera dancers who doesnt speak Spanish, and they do it so well, too.

Gracias a los profesores que con paciencia enseñan a Tyler y a los muchos niños que desde otros países se interesan en aprender nuestra marinera norteña.

Gracias a organizaciones como el Smithsonian Institution en Washington DC, a las diferentes Filiales del Club Libertad en Estados Unidos y en Mundo, A la Embajada del Perú en Washington DC y a las diferentes organizaciones que permiten que la marinera siga difundiendose en el mundo. Aquí en Washington DC, grandes y chicos tuvimos la suerte de presenciar uno de los espectáculos culturales más bellos sobre Perú, el Folklife Festival donde Peruanos y no peruanos pudimos disfrutar de la inmesa diversidad de nuestra cultura de la costa sierra y selva.

Thank you to the Smithsonian National Institution in Washington DC, Club Liberad and its chapters all over the United States and around the world, The Embassy of Perú in Washington DC and different organizations who continue promoting the marinera around the world. In Washington DC we were lucky to attend one of the most beautiful shows about Perú, the Folklife Festival, where Peruvians and non-Peruvians were able to enjoy the beauty and big diversity from our coast, mountains and amazonian.

Thank you to the many trainers who have taught Tyler and many other kids from other countries who are interested in learning our traditional marinera norteña.
