Cuantas veces haz escuchado esa pregunta? Quizás muchas si compites todos los fines de semana, verdad?
Cuan importante es ganar, y más aun saber perder. Con el paso del tiempo hemos aprendido que lo más importante es crecer con cada competencia. Obvio no es fácil ver a niños llorando porque no ganaron, pero mucho peor es hacerlos vivir en una nube de fantasia que no es la realidad. A veces hay padres que piensan que entrenando la ultima semana todos los días, van a ganar. O si ganastes un par de concursos significa que todos los concursos siguiente los vas a ganar. Eso tampoco es así.
Con el tiempo descubrimos que debemos seguir aprendiendo con cada competencia. Así ganes habrá cosas que corregir de tu baile y siempre seguirás aprendiendo.
Obvio muchas veces Tyler me dice y si no ganó? No ganas, le digo. PERO vamos a pensar mejor en que haz ganado con esta competencia? Haz ganado una experiencia más, Haz bailado y haz sido feliz haciéndolo, haz ganado una amiguita nueva, vez que si haz ganado, le digo? quizás hay que trabajar otras areas para que puedas llegar al primer puesto. Y siempre vemos las competencias así, lo principal al final es que tu niño sea feliz y aprenda con cada competencia.
También, le digo vamos a ver tu baile y el baile de los campeones y vamos a ver que cosas puedes mejorar, vamos a ver que le falta a tu baile para que ganes la próxima. Y seguimos adelante.

Y nos vamos por el 3er año que acudimos a las celebraciones del Señor de los Milagros. Siguiendo con el propósito de continuar creciendo nuestra FE en el Cristo Morado. y que Tyler y todos aquellos que nos siguen, se enteren de como podemos como padres seguir pasando nuestras tradiciones a nuestros hijos aun viviendo en otro país.
This is the 3rd year we come to the celebrations of the Christ of the Miracles, with the same purpose of continuing growing our faith in the our Christy and for Tyler and for those who follow us to continue learning our traditions eventhough living in a different country.
Este fin de semana acudimos a dos celebraciones una la misa en Homenaje del Señor y de los Milagros organizada por los devotos de la Iglesia de St Charles de Borromeo y la otra organizada por los devotos de Northern Virginia.
This past weekend we went to a couple celebrations to honor and venerate the Christ of the Miracles, one organized by the group of the St. Charles of Borromeo Church and the other one organizade by the group of Northern Virginia.
Y quien es el Señor de los Milagros mama? y porque se visten de morado? que es la procesión? mamá y esa canción bonita que cantan? Aun recuerdo que cada año que venia con mis padres siempre salimos y no podiamos irnos sin nuestro kilito de Turron de Doña Pepa, ahora seria buenísimos que vendieran su turrón de doña pepa pero no lo he visto 😦
Mommy, and who is the Christ of the Miracle, why everyone dressed in purple, what is a procession? and that beautiful song they sing? I also remember every year my whole family will come to one of the services of the Christ of the Miracles, after the service we wouldn’t leave if we didn’t get a pound of our delicious and traditional treat known as Doña Pepa. If will be awesome if they sell it here but I haven’t seen it ;(
El Señor de los Milagros de las Nazarenas, más comúnmente llamado Señor de los Milagros, es una imagen de Jesucristo originalmente pintada en una pared de adobe, ubicada tras el Altar Mayor del santuario de Las Nazarenas de Lima (Perú) y venerada en Lima y diversas partes del mundo.
The Lord of Miracles, also known as “Christ of Miracles”, is an image painted of Jesus Christ that is venerated in Lima, Peru. The image was painted during the 17th century by an unnamed African taken from what is now Angola to Peru as a slave. Its feast is the main Catholic celebration in Peru and one of the largest processions in the world.
Para mi familia tiene un significado muy especial, en el año 1974 hubo un terremoto muy fuerte a comienzos de Octubre, mi madre estaba embarazada de mi y pensó que ese día del terremoto nacería, quien les escribe; sin embargo pasaron unas semanas hasta que el 26 de Octubre llegue al mundo y mis padres me llamaron Evelyn Milagros, en honor al Señor de los Milagros, por haber cuidado de mi y de mi madre durante el terremoto del año 1974 y que haya nacido con bien.
The Christ of the Miracles has a special meaning for my family and I am pretty sure most catholics families who are devoted to him, we have our own personal story. A severe earthquake happened in the beggining of the month of October back in 1974. My mother was pregnant of the person who is writing this blog (ME), the doctors and everyone expected my arrival earlier than expected due to the eartquake although things went well and my mom gave birth on October 26th. In honor of the Christ of the Miracles, mi parents named me Evelyn Milagros (Milagros means Miracles).
A Tyler le explicamos que el Señor de los Milagros es parte de nosotros, es parte de ser Peruanos, le enseñamos y le explicamos lo que es la procesión. La procesión del Señor de los Milagros se realiza tradicionalmente en el mes de octubre. Sale en procesión desde el Monasterio de las Nazarenas el primer Sábado de Octubre rumbo a la Catedral de Lima y esta vez regresa al Santuario de las Nazarenas al día siguiente. Aquí acompañamos el anda del Señor de los Milagros y en las respectivas paradas de descanso se le ofrecen danzas y ofrendas. Es un honor acompañar y ver que Tyler le regala su hermoso baile a nuestro Señor.
We have explained Tyler that the Christ of the Miracles is part of our culture, part of being Peruvian, and have taught him and explained him what is the procession. The procession traditionally always happens during the month of October. The Procession goes from the Monastery of the Nazareth Church to the Cathedral in Lima and then it comes back to the Monastery.
Here in Virginia the procession of the Northern VA, goes around a school and there are different stops along the way, where offerings are given to the image of the Christ of the Miracles and beautiful dances are offered to the Christ of the Miracles. It is an honor to see Tyler offering his dance to our Christ of the Miracles.
Tanto ha crecido este culto con el curso de los años, que en el mes de octubre en el Perú y en Lima en particular, los devotos milagrinos se visten todo el mes con hábitos morados y una soga blanca a la cintura las damas y corbata morada, al cuello los caballeros.
The devotion for the Christ of the miracles is so big that is tradition for women to dress in purple with a white rope and men dress with a purple tie.
Cuando me dice mamá y esa canción dedicada al Señor de los Milagros, le digo es el himno que todos con fervor y muchas ganas le cantamos al Señor cada uno le pide y le da gracias a el por todo lo que nos da y por aquello que no nos da también.
When Tyler mentioned about the beautiful song he heard I said to him that is the anthem created especially for the Christ of the Miracles. We sing giving thanks and pray for everything that has granted to us and for those things that we haven’t received, too.
THREE KEYWORDS YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR KID BEFORE A COMPETITION

Y llego a la capital de los Estados Unidos, uno de los selectivos más esperados en Estados Unidos, el selectivo del Club Libertad de Washington DC. Hace unos años Tyler había ganado en la categoría Pre-Infantes. Esta vez ya en la siguiente categoría competiría en categoría “Infante”, donde sus pasos deben ser más firmes, donde ya debe tener una mejor coordinación, musicalización entre otros detalles.
And the Capital of the United States, hosted one of the most anticipated marinera competitions organized by Club Libertad Washington DC. A couple years ago Tyler won in the Pre-Infant category. This time Tyler would compete in a new category “Infant”, where his steps should be firmer, stronger, have a better coordination, recognize the music among other details.
Esta vez, era su primera participación en concurso después de haber pasado dos meses en Perú. Obvio había mucha expectativa de sus profesores, y de nosotros ver como se desenvolvía, de ver su avance en la pista de baile y sobre todo en una competencia.
It would be his first competition after spending two months training in Perú. Of course there was a lot of expectancy from his trainers and from ourselves. To see Tyler in the dance floor and in the overall competition.
Sin embargo como todo niño quizás no entiende el nivel de responsabilidad, de preparación y de seriedad de un concurso, como quizás lo vemos como padres y profesores. Incluso para que Tyler mejore su performance hemos tenido que cambiar su nutrición (ya les contaremos eso en otro blogpost) acerca todo lo que hemos hecho para se ponga más light, sin dejar de disfrutar sus gustitos)
Just as any other kid, perhaps Tyler does not understand, yet; the responsability, preparation and commitment that goes into getting ready for a competition, as his trainers and his parents understand it. We had even changed his eating habits for a more nutritional way of eaten (I will tell about this in another blogpost), Tyler is eating much better but he still gets to enjoy a little bit of his sweet treats.
Un día antes del concurso se cae de la sillón, yo escuche un PUM FUERTISIMO y se golpeo tan duro la cabeza que hasta puntos rojos de sangre tenía como que se le iba a reventar la piel y salir sangre. Obvio corrimos a ponerle hielo, lo primero que Tyler dijo fue, estoy bien mamá, yo quiero competir mamá. Y yo pensaba como? el sabia que había trabajo mucho para esta competencia y yo le preguntaba pero te sientes bien? no se durmió dentro de las primeras horas del golpe y lo seguimos observando.
On day before the competition, Tyler feel off our big couch and all I have heard was a huge POOM, he hit his head so hard I could see red dots to the point that they were going to explote. We run to put ice and the first thing Tyler said, was: Mommy I am ok, I want to compete. I was thinking what? he knew he had worked so hard for this competition and I asked him: are you sure you feel ok? Tyler didn’t sleep for the next few hours and we kept monitoring him.
Al día siguiente, el día de la competencia, yo me sentia rara, como mamá, COMO NOS PONEMOS ANTES DE UNA COMPETENCIA? yo siento que se me va a salir el estomago, no quiero comer, a veces siento nauseas, etc…sin embargo, mi actitud a tenido que cambiar con cada competencia. Trato de estar tranquila y trasmitir esa tranquilidad a Tyler; en nuestro caso, Tyler siente lo que yo siento y sabe como por arte de magia si yo no estoy bien. Después de muchas competencias sigo aprendiendo a controlar esos nervios que son tan difíciles de controlar. Entonces pretendo ser una mariposa feliz en el día de la competencia.
The next day, el día de la competencia, I felt weird, as moms, HOW DO YOU FEEL BEFORE THE COMPETITION? I feel as if my stomach will come out of my mouth, I don’t feel like eating, I feel nauseous, etc…but my attitude had to change. I tried to be calm and pass that calmness to Tyler. In our case Tyler knows how I feel and magically he knows if I am not feeling well. After many competitions I keep learning to control nerves that are so difficult to control. So I pretend to be the happiest butterfly on earth the day of the competition.

Hace poco lei un comentario de un jurado que decía que el había visto a un padre recriminando a un niño durante su primera presentación de la competencia y la carita del niño cambio el resto de la competencia y hasta el día de hoy su cara cambio. Cierto ó no, porque no vi ese caso en particular. Pero si he visto casos donde los padres le gritan HORRIBLE a los niños, si funciona en unos niños el gritarles o si en otros niños no funciona el gritarles, tampoco lo se. Solo se que los niños son niños deben divertirse, si les gusta el baile genial que lo hagan con el corazón y con mucha fuerza, pero sobretodo recuérdale a tu hijo cuanto lo amas, sin importar el resultado.
Not long ago I read a comment from one of the judges of Marinera saying that he had seeing a parent shouting to a kid after his first presentation during a competition, the face of the little kid changed and the rest of the competition he wasn’t the same happy kid from the first dance. And his faced isn’t the same when he dances until this day. True or not because I haven’t seen this particular case. I have seen parents yelling HORRIBLY to their kids. I don’t know if it works yelling or not to the kids. All I can say is that kids should be kids and have fun, if they like to dance they should dance with their heart and dance with all their strength but most importantly you should remember your kid, how much you love him, regardless of the results.
Adicionalmente a esto, en nuestra familia hacemos una mesa redonda antes que nos vayamos a la competencia y rezamos.
Adicionally to this, in our family we do a round table where we pray before we leave for the competition.

Finalmente Tyler bailo con su pareja Kadjika Gamboa y con ella se llevaron el primer puesto en la categoría infante del Club Libertad Washington DC.
Finally Tyler danced with his partner Kadjika Gamboa and they won first place in the Infante Category of the Club Libertad Washington DC.
